Liberty Kidz

Randy Jeffers, CEO of Liberty International, wanted to build an orphanage and start a public charity. He told a group of friends that: “…with over 150 million children without a place to live, regular meals, and someone to hold and love them, we have a lot of work to do. We can’t help them all, be we can make a difference in the lives of some of them.”

He even had a name picked out – he was going to call it Liberty Kidz.  Randy and wife, De Ar, told retired businessman Griff Lindell, “If you’ll just help us get our non-profit going, it will be the realization of a 20 year dream.”

Kush Carpets

“Kush Hand-Knotted Carpets” reads the sign outside the store at 900 S.E. Hawthorne Boulevard. Step inside and you’re in a world of artistic expression and everyday utility. Neat, knee-high stacks of carpets, sorted to size, cover the restored antique wood floor. On the main wall hang several room-size carpets in both traditional and contemporary patterns. A short return wall features display rugs demonstrating a variety of textures, patterns and colors.

Pins And Needles

When you walk into Pins and Needles, Mount Scott Community Acupuncture it is like you are walking into a particularly inviting living room.

It is not your regular doctors office waiting room, nor is it the transplanted Eastern motif and new age music of many acupuncture offices. Instead, a comfy couch beckons with bright cushions and the bright colors of Latin framed posters adorn the walls. There are community notice boards with brightly colored flyers from businesses in the local neighborhood and articles from the mainstream press about recent studies of acupuncture’s effectiveness for common and garden headache pain management and its use in IVF and fertility treatment.

DB Clay

There are probably a million ways to use duct tape.

But for a wallet?

It certainly made sense to Garett Stenson.  Always one with an eye for creativity and entrepreneurship, Garett began crafting stylized duct tape wallets first as a hobby, then as a way to make some extra money while pursing other interests. Hand-crafting 30,000 “Ductbill” wallets helped Garett pay his way through college, and it made him a popular fixture at Portland, Oregon’s Saturday Market and other fairs and craft events throughout the northwest.
